Camille McGirt

Founder & Executive Director

Camille McGirt is a 2013 graduate of the Health Policy and Management Program (BSPH) in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Camille currently works as a HealthCorps Coordinator in Brooklyn, New York at the Academy for Conservation and the Environment (South Shore High School). HealthCorps is a national non-profit started by Dr. Oz aimed at reducing childhood obesity.

During the fall of 2010, Ms. McGirt participated in the White House Internship Program and worked for an entire semester in the Office of Presidential Personnel. Upon completion of the White House Internship Program she interned in Congressman Emanuel Cleaver's (D-MO) office through the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Emerging Leaders Program while participating in the Semester in Washington Politics Program at George Washington University. When Ms. McGirt left Washington she wanted to continue public service efforts and combine it with her love for public health. During the summer of 2011, she established “Healthy Girls Save the World” (HGSW) a 501c3 non-profit that provides a positive space for girls in North Carolina which fosters the development of healthy habits related to proper nutrition, physical activity, and overall healthy lifestyles. HGSW provides free events for girls to learn about nutrition, physical activity, positive relationships, self-esteem and good study habits. Ms. McGirt was very involved on campus at UNC as a Buckley Public Service Scholar, UNC Admissions Ambassador, Leadership Institute Fellow, and an Organizing for America National Fellow. Her program, Healthy Girls Save the World has grown into a nationally award winning non-profit receiving awards from organizations such as the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), the Pearson Foundation, the Maya Angelou Center for Women’s Health and Wellness, the Kenan Biddle Partnership, and Liberty Mutual.

Rachel McGirt

Founder

Rachel graduated in May 2017 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Rachel is a former full scholarship women’s basketball player from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She made the decision to transfer to UNC, and took on that challenge! As a Division 1 athlete Rachel learned great discipline, what it meant to work hard, and healthy practices that she strives to include in her life every day. Along with basketball, Rachel tried her best to be involved in her campus community. While at UNCA Rachel was involved in the Black Student Association, the Connections Mentoring Program, and was an Asheville City Public Schools weekly volunteer. While at UNC Rachel was very involved within the campus community. Also she continued to stay on track with her major in political science and minor in African studies. Rachel has gone through a personal account with childhood obesity and she enjoys sharing her story. She is very passionate about young girls and their development into women. She hopes that she can be a light for other young girls and young women so that they can understand the true definition of “health”. Rachel is very excited about her role as co-founder and working with Healthy Girls Save the World at UNC.
