Summer Experience

HGSW Summer Experience

Each year, HGSW selects a group of about rising 6th-9th grade girls to be participants in our annual Summer Experience. The event is a uniquely powerful combination of trained female counselors, female varsity athletes, expert speakers and enriching activities led by other student organizations. The camp is centered on our three pillars - Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies, and Healthy Relationships.

The 2018 Summer Experience will be a 2 week long camp held on UNC's Campus. Each Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the 2-week program will be dedicated to implementing the Be Fit, Be Fab, and Be Fueled components adapted from the evidence based curriculum New Moves. The girls will engage in physical activity with college athletes, lessons on nutrition, and interactive presentations from female professionals. We will take a break from the curriculum each Thursday for a fun activity, like a field trip!

Each Friday, family sessions will be implemented. During the family sessions, youth and parents will collaboratively discuss goal-setting, learn about healthy cooking, and engage in an end-of-week celebration. Additionally, at the end of each day during the summer experience, youth will take home a parent postcard, adapted from the New Moves curriculum, to influence family environment by sharing healthy recipes that families can try making together.
